Warner Robins, GA- Joseph Shields, 89, passed away on Wednesday, October 24, 2018 at his residence with his children by his bedside. A funeral Mass will be held on Friday, November 2, 2018 at 11:30 am at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with interment immediately following in Andersonville National Cemetery with full military honors. A rosary will be said on Thursday, November 1, 2018 beginning at 6:00 pm at Burpee-Scott Memorial Chapel with a visitation for family and friends to follow until 8:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Flagler College, Institutional Advancement, 74 King St., St. Augustine, FL 32084.
Joseph was born on July 19, 1929 in Detroit, MI to the late Patrick and Florence (Mathie) Shields. He honorably and faithfully served his country in the United States Air Force until his retirement after 21 years of service. Joseph later went on to work in sales for about 15 years with the Norton Company. He was an avid baseball fan, specifically the Detroit Tigers and most recently the Atlanta Braves. Joseph was very active in his Catholic faith and even though his health did not enable him to attend mass, he was always worshipping and praying from his home daily. In addition to his parents, Joseph was preceded in death by his wife, Gertrud (Kubeile) Shields; brothers: James Shields and Daniel Shields; sisters: Virginia Rideout and Patricia Garcia.
Left to cherish his memory are his children, Karin Peterman of Saucier, MS, Florence Tingerthal (James) of Warner Robins, GA and Janette Allen (Mark) of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL; 10 grandchildren: Joseph Glydewell, Patrick Glydewell, James Peterman, Jr., Mary Lock, Andrea Tingerthal, William Tingerthal, Felicia Vega, Kyle Vega, Caitlyn Allen and Cassidy Allen; 13 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; sister: Elizabeth Cook of Prescott, AZ; brother: Thomas Shields of Tucson, AZ.
